Blog Assignment #1

HERO

COLOR: Unlike most of us, Ariel Spencer, an average girl in most respects, has one flaw in her existence. Due to an accident in a blizzard on her 19th birthday, the details of her life before the catastrophe are hazy. Some details seem to fade into the “white” of her mind just as she faded into the snowstorm. I chose white to represent the fading she envisions in her own mind, and the “fading away” she experienced during the storm. The electric purple represents the spirit Ariel has in her life and the bright, powerful clarity that “discovering” a new memory brings her.

LIGHT: Just as she is in the dark about her memories, everyone else is also. There is minimal light placed on her to represent her confusion and that she is responsible for providing her own light, as seen by the person (her) carrying the lamp. Being responsible for carrying her own light represents her inability to gain key insights or enlightenment about her past from those around her, or their unwillingness to help her. The path before her is only partially lit, and if there was more light we might discover that she’s not even following the right path, or she’s not even on one at all, which are her biggest fears.

SHAPE: A rose is thought to be a delicate, fragile, beautiful flower. It surely is, no doubt. What lies beneath the rose, the exterior of the plant, is the rest of the rose bush, the thorny, tangled, shadowed dark heap beneath the flower. Ariel Spencer is the same. She is a rose in most respects. She’s pretty, she’s obviously only humanas we can judge by her injuries making her delicate to the force of the world. Just like the rose she has a tangled interior. Unsure of her past, present, and future she has no choice but to be full of turmoil and often times misguided anger, or “thorns”.

VILLAIN

COLOR: The antagonist is the Mayor of the town, Mayor Damon. His nature is represented in the black he wears and the black in his heart. The red is the blood from the wrong he’s done. While not entirely shrouded in black, the red is still able to seep through showing his ability to be foiled, although it is never guaranteed (or ever has happened). His colors are dominating with clear sinister intentions. Black and white are opposites; red and purple do however have a relationship due to their proximity on the color wheel. Perhaps there are personality aspects of each that are not so different from those of the other.

LIGHT: Due to Mayoral status the spotlight of the town is very much on him, as seen in the picture. Despite this, he still does not ever present the most clear picture of himself. You may seen him, the light may be on him, but do you know what he is? What he presents himself to be? No. Which makes him all the more tricky to survive as a shadow in a well-lit environment. The light also demonstrates his importance. He can see what is around him, or at least what is in his immediate future, but those around him can’t see him. He is a master of masking himself.

SHAPE: Mayor Damon is a grandfather clock. Not literally of course, but in the way that he is a dominant feature of any room in that he is tall and imposing. His appearance and public appearances are strictly regimented, like the functioning of the clock itself. The clock represents grandeur not only in design but also in it’s unnecessary function. New watches, laptops, microwaves, alarm clocks, coffee pots, and cell phones now track time cheaply and effortlessly for us, but somehow the grandfather clock stays around, never leaving or loosing it’s cultural importance. Mayor Damon is like this to the town, never leaving, always imposing, and slightly creepy in appearance.
